William Franklin Graham Jr. (November 7, 1918, February 21, 2018) was an American evangelist, a prominent evangelical Christian figure, and an ordained Southern Baptist minister.

Billy Graham became well-known internationally in the late 1940s. One of his biographers has placed him “among the most influential Christian leaders” of the 20th century.

Graham began broadcasting his sermons over the radio during a Christian show called Songs in the Night. Once a week he also hosted a program called The Hour of Decision, a program ABC initially transmitted to 150 stations before reaching its peak of 1,200 stations across America.

Eventually, this program was converted into a television show which ran for three years. The success of Graham’s radio and television programs speaks to his role as a Christian media visionary. Graham used the media as a means of spreading the gospel of Christ, allowing him to access millions of people around the globe.

In addition to Billy Graham’s religious aims, he helped shape the worldview of a huge number of people who came from different backgrounds, leading them to find a relationship between the Bible and contemporary secular viewpoints.

He was also lifelong friends with another televangelist, the founding pastor of the Crystal Cathedral Robert Schuller, whom Graham talked into starting his own television ministry.”
