TikTok is the latest social media platform to blow up, due to its catchy dance moves and creativity.

Although it was first released back in 2016, this short-form video app started becoming popular in 2018/2019, and as of 2020, it has gone completely mainstream.

Going viral on the app requires earning a spot on the For You Page, a page TikTok supplies with videos it thinks you might enjoy.

One way to increase your chances of success on the app is to Duet with videos that are already going viral. This guide will teach you everything you need to know about how to Duet on TikTok.

Creating a shareable duet:

The first thing to know for how to duet on TikTok is that it involves steps from two parties. The first TikToker has to allow others to duet their recorded video.

This is important for brands who want to kick off a duet challenge or ask their followers to duet their content.

Step 1.

If you want people to duet your video, think about the kind of content that people would engage with. After you’ve uploaded the video, tap Next.

This is the red button at the bottom of the screen. You’ll come to a mostly-white screen where your video is visible at the top right.

Step 2.

At the top, you’ll see a space to ‘Describe your video’. This is where you add your caption.  You’ll want to include your message here. Make sure to include a call-to-action – and maybe a challenge hashtag.

Step 3.

At the side of the screen underneath, you’ll see some toggle buttons and an option for ‘Who can watch this video.’

Tap the option for ‘Who can watch this video’. This is to do with your video’s privacy settings.

The options are ‘Only me’ (don’t use this for duets!) ‘Friends’ (meaning only your followers can see the video) or ‘Everyone’.

For the best chance of viral success, choose ‘Everyone’, so as many TikTok accounts as possible can see your video.

Step 4.

You may have guessed this one, as you’ll see a toggle on the screen for ‘Allow Duet‘. Make sure you’ve dragged this toggle to the right, so it goes green. This gives your permission for others to duet with your video.

It’s enabled by default, so you might not need to swipe this. But keep an eye out! If the toggle is grey. This will disable duets. You’ll need to swipe it across to enable duets.

Step 5.

It’s time to share! Tap the red button at the bottom of the screen.

A Duet on TikTok is basically when you record a video that follows along with another person’s video.

When you post a Duet, the original video is placed on the right side of the screen, and the newly recorded video (yours) is placed on the left.

Both videos play at the same time. In order to Duet a video, the original account must have Duets enabled. Users can opt to allow anyone to Duet their videos, no one, or just their friends (accounts that follow one another).

1. Open the TikTok app.
2. Press the Me button at the bottom-right of the screen.
3. Tap the three horizontal dots a the top-right of the screen.
4. Navigate to Privacy > Who can Duet with your videos

1. Open the TikTok app.
2. Navigate to the video you wish to Duet.

5. Hit the red button at the bottom of the screen and record your video.
6. Add any effects, text, filters, or stickers.

How to Duet on TikTok with sound

When you Duet a video, the sound from the original video will automatically be added to your video. However, you can add your own sound by following these instructions:

1. Open the TikTok app.
2. Navigate to the video you wish to Duet.
3. Select the share button (which looks like an arrow) on the right side of the screen.
4. Choose the Duet option.
5. Press the Mic button on the right side of the screen to turn on your sound.
6. Hit the red button at the bottom of the screen and record your video.

Press the Volume button.
